Question Marks
question mark — noun
2. something unanswered or unknown
I saw my friend Jessica ask for help the other day. She didn’t do it directly, and it wasn’t premeditated. She was relating a bit of a story about herself and, as sometimes happens with humans, she took a brief, stream of conscious detour. A need was revealed.
It was clear that revelation was not her intent. She was just joining in the conversation and out it came. Her question mark.
A little later, another one of our friends approached her. She gently leaned into the tender spot that Jessica had made known and offered some assistance. Both of their lives will change as a result.
Sometimes, to effect change our lives, we simply need to open our mouths. Just giving air time to our question marks by speaking them is enough to put the universe in motion. When we express an unmet need or talk through a plan we’re unsure of, we are not only sharing it with another person, we are further defining it for ourselves. We hone in.
We all have question marks in our lives. Things we fear or don’t have answers for (yet). Things that sit just outside our understanding like a word on the tip of your tongue.
Another example…a woman I’ve known for years is sorting through what is next for her in life. It is her question mark. In spite of her current un-comfort, she is making good progress.
She’s met with inspiring mentors and considered a path of least resistance. She has pursued new activities and paused familiar ones. She feels out of sync and lacks the comforting confidence that comes with believing one is on a defined path.
Like a diligent prospector that which we willingly let fall away will reveal our treasure. All of her disparate activity is helping rule ideas out. Progress.
Regardless of how we express our question marks, we must continue to present them to the universe and to ourselves. We never know how…or when…the universe will answer.
