Humanness
“I’ve been around a long time and life still has a whole lot of surprises for me.” –Loretta Lynn
We are busy. Our work is important. The household needs managing. We are taking care of our duties and responsibilities–going to the dentist, walking the dog, and saving for retirement. It is in the midst of these mundane activities that our lives unfold.
With beauty and grace, life awakens us through moments of shared authenticity.
People being authentically themselves do so unabashedly. Whatever the form the authenticity takes, it is done so without thought of an audience’s applause. It is simply one human being living their truth in the presence of others. This humanness is what makes us most attractive.
At my place of worship, I have seen acts of what I will term unspeakable bravery. On occasion…some people there…sing a cappella. They aren’t concerned with how they look doing it or whether it is a perfect rendition. It simply brings them joy to sing together, and so they do. Humanness.
At work, I have seen senior leaders become unexpectedly emotional when speaking about the magnitude of organizational change impacting their employees. The warmth of their emotions catches them and us off guard. Humanness.
In my home, I have been the recipient of long, unsolicited, bear hugs from my teenage son. Like a shooting star, such pure affection is an unexpected, infrequent, and treasured gift. Humanness.
The divine beauty of our human souls is present in the day in and day outs of our lives. All that is required of us are eyes to see and a heart to recognize that what makes us human, and ultimately what surprises us most, is our love.
